Humid forests at the heart of Martinique's vegetation

The humid forests of Martinique represent the heart of the island's vegetation, occupying almost half (46 %) of its forest area and more than half (57 %) of the public forests. They are made up of distinct but conjoined forest spaces with very humid (hydrophilic forest) and moderately humid (mesophilic forest) areas. The hydrophilic forest visible here in the epicenter of the island, on the territory of Gros-Morne, occupies the massifs of central and northern Martinique. The mesophilic forest, for its part, extends over the smaller space between the previous ensemble and the dry forest. The two types of forest are distinguished by the amount of precipitation they receive: more than 98 inches (2,500 mm) of water per year for the hydrophilic forest, while the mesophilic forest benefits from 63 to 110 inches (1,600 and 2,800 mm) of rain.
