Houses connected by smuggling trails

The traditional wooden or stone houses of the Jura region seem scattered in the middle of the combes (valleys) in the Haut-Jura. However, they are all connected by former smuggling trails that become so many trails suitable for snowshoeing or sledding in winter. Today mostly made of plastic and wood or metal, the first sleds were crafted from whalebones. They can be curved at the front or protected by a leather or rubber apron at ground level.
