Endemic to New Caledonia, the houp tree (Montrouziera cauliflora) is a rot-proof yellow tree with a very slow growth. Considered the founding element of the clans, it has a symbolic and sacred value for the Kanak who use it to make the sculpted parts carrying their traditional huts such as the roof ridges, poles, doorframes and lintels.
