Houp tree of the Blue River Provincial Park
The houp tree (Montrouziera cauliflora) is a tree with a straight trunk endemic to New Caledonia and present throughout the territory and on all types of soil. It grows in dense evergreen humid forests of low or medium altitude, between 656ft and 3,609ft (200-1,100m), and can reach 98ft (30m) high and 9.8ft (3m) in diameter. Its gray to reddish bark - depending on the density of the forest - is fairly deeply cracked in the vertical direction.
