From the time it was opened in 1674, the Hôtel des Invalides has been a hospital, a hospice, barracks, a convent, and a factory, where shoes, uniforms and tapestries were made. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the number of veterans being cared for and housed declined inexorably, and the buildings were reallocated. In 1777, the collection of plan-reliefs left the Louvre for the Invalides. Today, a quarter of the surface area of the Invalides is devoted to the Musée de l’Armée and the Musée des Plans-reliefs. The Hôtel des Invalides also houses the office of the military governor of Paris and some services of the Ministry of Defence.
