Tribute to the victims of the Fieschi attack

The Dôme des Invalides church houses several tombs of military men such as Turenne, Vauban, Foch, Lyautey, and Napoleon I. Under the altar of the Saint-Louis cathedral, a staircase leads to the Saint-Grégoire chapel, which houses the graves of the governors of the Invalides. Under the chapel are buried 14 of the 18 victims of the attack perpetrated by Giuseppe Fieschi against King Louis-Philippe, on the anniversary of the Trois-Glorieuses, on 28 July 1835. Fieschi’s infernal machine, equipped with 25 rifle barrels, machine-gunned the crowd as the king passed by, without hitting him. Nowadays, the machine is kept in the National Archives Museum.
