The color of greater flamingos (Phœnicopterus roseus) is more or less intense depending on the period. Their plumage is paler and almost white in summer, while it turns pink to reddish in winter during courtship displays. Flamingos then smooth their feathers with an impermeable oil based on carotenoids produced by the uropygial glands located near their rumps. This smoothing enables them to waterproof their feathers and protect them from the cold while attracting partners with this colorful makeup.
