The Camargue region is home to three-quarters of the French bird population, with more than 350 species. This preserved natural area and Natura 2000 reserve is a hot and humid ecosystem appreciated by many species of endangered birds. The many ponds sown along the landscape of the Gard department are a source of vegetation and varied food for the fauna. In addition to the animal population, the salt works are also a botanical haven with more than 300 species of plants such as the Dunaliella salina microscopic algae. Eaten by the Artemia salina shrimp, it gives the saltworks their specific pink color.
