The Ribeauvillé forest, near Riquewihr, has more than 200 species of moss. They develop, sheltered under large spruces' propitious shade. Among them, Anomodon viticulosus is a moss variety whose fruits arise on branched stems. It grows attached to rocks, limestone, or at the base of trunks such as maple trees. Its presence also indicates calcareous or alkaline soil.
