Equestrian teams are guided by a leader who controls the horses and indicates the direction to follow. He can guide different types of hitch defined according to the number of horses: one, two, or four. A solo team is pulled by a single horse. A tandem hitch has two horses located one behind the other, whereas, in pair hitches (photo), the two horses are placed next to each other. Finally, four-horse carriages - the most frequent configuration in competitions - are called team carriages. They are composed of four horses divided into two pairs located one behind the other. The front pair is made up of volley horses, the rear pair of timoniers.
