Hit by a floating mine

On 19 June 1944, after landing the equipment and weapons on Omaha Beach, the landing ship LST-523 was hit by a floating mine, cutting the ship in half. Radiomen Julius and Ludwig Pieper were on board, dying in the wreck. Ludwig's body was found in Omaha and buried in the Colleville-sur-Mer Normandy American Cemetery. Julius’ body however was only found in 1961 in the ship’s wreckage, but was not identified at first. His identity was finally discovered in 2017, and Julius Pieper was reunited with his twin brother on 19 June 2018, exactly 74 years after their death.
