Mont Saint Odile dominates the plain of Alsace with a statue of the saint blessing it. It is a place of pilgrimage frequented by both believers and tourists. At its summit stands the Abbey of Hohenbourg, founded by Saint Odile, who has since become patroness saint of Alsace. Further down are the remains of a 6.83 mi (11 km) long pagan wall that encircles the plateau. A second monastery stands at the foot of the Mont. It welcomed the sicks and infirms who could not make it to the top.
