The Ouvèze separates the medieval upper town from the current city of Vaison-la-Romaine, which covers the Gallo-Roman town, whose archaeological sites in La Villasse and Puymin are cleared over 37 acres (15 ha). The hill of Puymin, to the east, is largely wooded, and most of the Gallo-Roman city of yesteryear remains buried under the current Vaison-la-Romaine. West of La Villasse, two Romanesque buildings - the Saint-Quenin chapel and the Notre-Dame de Nazareth cathedral and its cloister - bear witness to the superimpositions and movements of populations over the ages, as do the city ramparts largely built in stones from ancient sites.
