Castellane’s champagne can be recognised by the red St Andrew’s cross on the label. The brand was created in 1895 by Vicomte Florens de Castellane. The business was then sold to the Mérand family who kept the prestigious name. At the beginning of the 20th century, Fernand Mérand had the Art Nouveau buildings built against the railway line and the Marne river. The Castellane’s Tower, which was originally a water tower and then a ‘réclame’ (advertisement), is 66 metres high and has 237 steps. It is listed as a historical monument for its decorations and Art Nouveau architecture.
