Occupied over the centuries by the Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals and Muslims, the site of Propriano remained uninhabited until the construction of the first commercial warehouse in the mid-17th century. In 1878, the erection of the lighthouse at the end of the Scogliu Longu promontory confirmed the port vocation of the city which traded the products of Sartène's hinterland : wood, coal, barley, wheat.
