Underwater, the hippopotamus moves by walking. If it stays still, it can stay under water for up to 6 minutes but usually goes up every minute. Its legs’ morphology allows it not to sink into the mud despite its weight. When a hippopotamus dives, it is able to close its nostrils and its ears to prevent water from getting inside.
