Beyond the tourist appeal of its geological formations, the Hienghène region - on the east coast of Grande-Terre - is the stronghold of Jean-Marie Tjibaou, the former leader of the Kanak independence movement assassinated in Ouvéa in 1989. It remains a bastion of the Kanak culture and is home to many tribes attached to the maintenance of their traditions in the inland valleys of Werap, Poindjap, Tiendanite or Tendo.
