In the sunny winters of southern France, the Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni hermanni) seeks well-drained habitats, sheltered from any risk of flooding, to hibernate. It then chooses to protect itself at the foot of a bush or buried under a litter of dead leaves while waiting for her activities to resume in the spring.
