When the Hienghène hen gushed out of the ocean to help the clans of this remote region northeast of Grande-Terre, offerings were offered to her and a nocturnal ceremony paid homage to her strange appearance. Since then, a rite is perpetuated to honor the hen considered by the Kanak tribes as the embodiment of an ancestor living in the water and who would have resurfaced to help his people.
