The presence in winter and spring of an arctic dry haze, mainly due to anthropogenic pollutants emitted by the temperate regions thousands of miles away, was reported as early as the 1950s. The Arctic is polluted by aerosols made up of a mixture of acids, toxic organic compounds and heavy metals which, by absorbing a fraction of the solar energy, contribute to global warming and accelerate ice melting.
