The coral reefs' limestone labyrinths contribute to the lives of more than one million animal and plant species and host more than 25% of all marine species, including the juveniles of many benthic fish in adulthood. They are also at the base of the formation of other ecosystems as varied as sand expanses, shoals, islands and even coastal forests.
