The Dominican convent in Unterlinden was founded by two noble widows in the first half of the 13th century. It was set up at the place called “sub tilia” or “unter den linden” (under the lime trees) and was under the direction of the Dominicans. The monastery was a centre of Rhine mysticism. In the 13th and 14th centuries, it experienced intense artistic, spiritual and economic development. Restructured in the 15th century, it continued to develop, in particular thanks to ties with the great families of the region. Since the 18th century, the convent is listed as a Historic Monument and houses part of the Unterlinden Museum.
