Whether quantitatively or qualitatively, the occupants of mountain castles faced many difficulties in obtaining water. Despite the presence of a 205 ft deep well (62,50 m), three cisterns, and the use of external sources, the Castle of Haut-Kœnigsbourg was no exception. The restoration of 1900 resolved the problem. The water was brought manually by the workers on the site. It was then transported from the pumping station, built below the castle, by a gasoline engine. The fortress was equipped with a reservoir, which allowed its supply with running water.
