In the winter, muskoxen herds migrate to Arctic highland plateaus where the cold is bitter but high winds keep large amounts of snow from forming on the plains. Food is frequently scarce and muskoxen sometimes resort to digging into the snow and frozen earth for moss and lichen. In summer, they go down on sheltered and moist lowlands.
