Harbour Island and its Vauban fort

Harbour Island is a fortified rocky island of 18 hectares located off the coast of Dinard, 3 km west of Saint-Malo. Its fort is part of the Malouin defensive system planned by Vauban in the 17th century. At war with the League of Augsburg, Louis XIV wanted to protect France’s leading commercial port from English incursions. The role of Fort Harbour was to close off two western access routes to Saint-Malo and to crossfire with the forts of La Conchée, Petit Bé and the Fort National. Privately owned, the island is closed to the public and was once owned by Alain Delon. Harbour Island and its fort have been classified as historical monuments since 1952.
