The half-timbered Burgundian houses represent a late medieval heritage preserved here and there by miracle because they are very sensitive to bad weather and fire. After the big fires that devastated entire towns, ordinances were taken in the middle of the 16th century to limit their construction, prohibit this type of facade on the street and coat the ancient houses to protect them from flames. The village of Châteauneuf-en-Auxois in Côte-d'Or still has one, now fully renovated and occupied by a restaurant.
