The boreal lynx is above all a forest animal, which adapts to all types of wooded stands provided they are sufficiently large and dense both in their undergrowth and in the quantity of trees. No wonder then that 80% of its French population is today distributed in Franche-Comté, the most forested region in France. Mainly present in mountain forests, it also occupies a minority of low-altitude forest regions, but the chance of encountering in the wilderness the so called 'ghost of the forest' is very low.
