The fire coral colonies are vertical yellow or brown limestone structures in the form of leaves or plates up to 23in (60cm). The sturdy blade shapes are more common on the edges of wave-beaten reefs or on flats where currents are strong and turbulent up to 131ft (40m) deep in tropical and subtropical areas.
