Honduras is divided into 4 main regions : the interior highlands formed by extinct volcanoes, the eastern coast of the Mosquitia covered with tropical forest, the northern Caribbean coast bordered by a cultivated coastal plain and the lowlands of the Gulf of Fonseca. These constitute a narrow strip of 15mi (24km) wide, formed of volcanic soil from the mountains. The volcanic cones of El Tigre and Zacate rise in the gulf.
