Con sus 130 millones de años, esta zona surgió en el período cretácico y, posteriormente, fue el hogar del pueblo comechingón. Se cuenta de que Ongamira fue escenario de cruentas luchas con los conquistadores españoles, incluso hay versiones que indican que muchos de los originarios subían al Cerro Colchiqui –emblema de la zona– para quitarse la vida antes de caer en manos de los opresores.
