Outside the rutting period, male impalas associate with female herds or live in distinct bachelor groups. Some of them, usually old individuals, are also solitary or live in smaller groups of two or three. These associations provide safety in numbers. As the rutting season approaches, males separate and face each other to establish their territory and their harem.
