A baboon is hardly ever alone, the rest of the troop is not far ! Like many primates, baboons live in a hierarchical group in which each baboon has a social rank depending on its degree of dominance. The female dominance is hereditary whereas males must establish their dominance by attempting to intimidate other males and reduce them to obedience. A higher social rank means privileged access to reproduction and food, hence the interest of struggling to climb the hierarchy.
