Caves and burial cave

Among the various cavities which dig their walls, the cliffs of Jokin - north of the island of Lifou - shelter a burial cave for the chiefs of the tribe of Jokin. Located at the edge of the sky and the sea and in the earth, as opposed to the world of the living, it is closed by 'gaulettes' - woven bamboo stems - which represent the tribe's offerings to its deceased chiefs.
