The calcareous soil of Makatea in French Polynesia contains the fossil remains of a large number of marine organisms which, by degrading, gave the phosphate deposits exploited till the sixties. However the underground water table has continuously chiselled the rock over millennia and formed caves and underground galleries of fresh water.
