The term makatea is eponymous to Makatea Island, a raised atoll of coral origin located in the Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia. Makatea often have steep cliffs riddled with caves lined with concretions and impressive stalactites. Some makatea are exploited for their phosphate i.e the deposits of organic matter accumulated in their inner depression.
