The architectural style of the Cotentin peninsula in Normandy uses granite as the predominant building material along with oolitic limestone, also called Caen stone. The materials used are local and substantially the same as those of other regions of the Massif Armoricain where sandstone, Athis red granite from Orne, and brown shale abound. The timber framings or half-timberings typical of Upper-Normandy are rarer there. As for the roofs, they are usually made of slate or schist.
