Alençon granite and Jurassic limestones
1
0
Dating from some 350 million years ago, the Hercynian granite used to build Alençon, Orne's prefecture, was extracted from the quarries west of the town. Particularly low in iron and, therefore, of good quality, it is easy to cut. Generally used as a capstone and device stone around windows, it is associated with the Jurassic limestones of the Alençon countryside used as filler rubble. The building of the city, therefore, reflects its geological situation at the limit of the Armorican base (granite) and the Bassin Parisien (limestone).
