The large rooms of the underground cavities of Makatea in French Polynesia correspond to the wider parts of the karstic network. They are located at the point of intersection of the crevices and fractures and correspond to the confluence of galleries and wells. Their widening results from the collapse of the vault's layers by dissolution or mechanical clearing.
