The Grand Ballon is the highest mountain of the Vosges, located 25 kilometers northwest of Mulhouse, France. It is also the highest point of the Grand-Est French region with a height of 1‘424 meters above mean sea level. Grand Ballon means great [round-topped] mountain because a ballon in French is a geographical term for a mountain with a rounded summit, similar to the German Kuppe. The mountain is part of the so-called Belchen System, a group of mountains with the German name Belchen that may have been part of a Celtic sun calendar.
