King Louis IX had the embellishment work on the Saint-Denis Basilica, initiated by Abbot Suger in the 12th century, continued. But the king died in 1270, before the work was completed. His many donations nevertheless contributed to the rapid construction. Great architects such as Pierre de Montreuil completed the basilica in barely 50 years. Inside, the church appears to be higher than its 28 metres thanks to columns set on fasciculate pillars that correspond to the arches of the vault. This way, the eye is directed from the bottom to the top of the church. The height of Gothic art and medieval architectural mastery has been reached!
