The Nesque - from Annesca, a Roman deity represented as a woman carrying water and ears of wheat symbolizing life and abundance - is a small river in the Vaucluse department. It has its source in Aurel on the eastern side of Mont Ventoux, crosses the Monts de Vaucluse, and flows into the Sorgue upstream of Avignon. It dug spectacular gorges over twelve miles (20 km) in the Urgonian limestone (130 to 125 Ma) of the Monts de Vaucluse from Monieux at 2,050 ft (625 m) of altitude to Méthamis at 885 ft (270 m).
