Gorbio's patriarch elm
0
0
The main square of the medieval village of Gorbio in the Alpes-Maritimes department is occupied by an ancestral elm. The tree was planted in 1713 during the signing of the Treaty of Utrecht with Louis XIV, King of France. It symbolizes the feeling of peace felt by the inhabitants when the County of Nice came back under the sovereignty of the Duke of Savoy. Listed as a remarkable tree in 2003, the ancestral elm of Gorbio celebrated its 300th anniversary ten years later and is still well alive despite its hollow trunk.
