Gliding on airflows

The Griffon vulture, reintroduced in the territory of the Grands Causses since the beginning of the 1980s, is one of the largest raptors in France and a species protected nationwide. With its large wingspan sometimes up to more than 6.56 ft (2 m), the Griffon vulture is a gliding bird that needs ascending airflows to take flight. It, therefore, installs its nest in rocky escarpments, preferably in the low mountain area, close to wide valleys and high plateaus. The birds choose walls with cavities or cornices to protect themselves from predators and open access to facilitate take-offs and landings.
