The various colors visible today in the Provençal Colorado of Rustrel correspond to different levels and degrees of alteration of glauconite (a clay rich in iron) under the effect of deep water circulation. This hydrated iron silicate is prevalent in sedimentary rocks accumulated in the sea at relatively shallow depths, in coastal areas, and in many current marine deposits.
