In the Arctic, the pack, perennial ice surrounded by water and in permanent movement, have to be distinguished from the fast ice, seasonal ice attached to the terrestrial coasts. With warmer temperatures, movements of marine currents and wind, ice blocks or ice floe break off the pack, drift, and collide with each other or with the fast ice, creating pressure ridges and deformations.
