The island of Maré is the highest and wildest of the four Loyalty Islands. Its fairly empty central plateau rises over 164ft (50m) and reaches 423ft (129m) at the level of the cliffs in the south of the island. It includes remains of the volcanic substructure and has caves and water holes carved into its coral limestones.
