The Central Chain of Grande-Terre, the main island of New Caledonia, forms a mountain range made up of a series of ancient folds. Its relatively low geological complexes date from the Permian (225-280 million years) to the Tertiary (1.5-65 million years). A true and nickel-rich spinal cord of the island, it is also at the origin of its main mining deposits.
