After half a century of exploitation and the extraction of 11 million tons of phosphates, the industrial fever of Makatea fell in the mid-1960s causing a dramatic fall in the population from 4000 to 70 inhabitants. The amazing geological configuration in subterranean and submarine caves and crevices of the subsoil of the island could provide a geological and touristic relay to this island in need of a destiny.
