The Pre-Alps of Azur form a massif which stretches from west to east south of the Verdon and west of the Var river between Castellane, Grasse and Vence. They are made up of plateaus and mountain chains of clayey and karstic limestones, the average altitude of which varies between 2,952ft (900m) for the plateaus and 4,593ft (1,400m) for the mountains.
