Geology of an elevated atoll
The geological originality of Makatea in French Polynesia is due to the fact that the coral growth of the summit of the submarine volcanic mountain formed 40 to 50 million years ago at the origin of the Tuamotus was raised by a hundred meters above sea level by the emergence of underwater volcanoes. Makatea has become a unique elevated atoll while the other current atolls are empty or filled rings.
